Graphic Designer Gives Modern Logos a Retro Makeover

If you think that modern logo designs are too simplistic and lack creativity, you’re not alone. A lot of people believe that previous eras, especially the ‘80s and ‘90s, were more imaginative and better at producing more captivating design solutions.

One of them is graphic designer Kostya Petrenko, who is a self-proclaimed “retro design enthusiast.” Petrenko is using his love for retro design as an inspiration for a fun project that sees him giving modern logos a retro makeover.

In his artworks, Petrenko takes the original idea behind the logos of businesses like Netflix, Spotify, Instagram, Duolingo, and YouTube and presents it in a way that designers from several decades ago would.

For example, for his retro YouTube logo design, Petrenko took the signature “play button” and placed it inside a vintage TV console.

Petrenko produces both the still images of the logos and motion graphics that look like they came straight from VHS tapes. He also frequently provides viewers with insight into his creative process by showing the process of creating these logos.
